The Tactile Mind: ‘Haptic Knowing’ Explores Art of Touch
The ǿմý Ridley-Tree Museum of Art presents “Haptic Knowing,” a new exhibition showcasing five artists whose work explores touch as a way of thinking, learning, and understanding the world.
Featuring the work of Andrea Bersaglieri, Lea Feinstein, Janet Neuwalder, Carol Shaw-Sutton, and Eliot Spaulding, the exhibition runs from Sept. 3 through Nov. 7. A free, public opening reception will be held on Thursday, Sept. 3, from 4 to 6 p.m.
Interim museum director Chris Rupp notes that through years of sustained experimentation and direct engagement with materials, each artist has developed a distinctive visual language shaped by the reciprocal exchange between hand, material and process.
“In an era increasingly mediated by screens, this exhibition invites viewers to recognize the intelligence of touch and imagine the gestures, decisions and accumulated knowledge embodied in each work,” Rupp says.
A downstairs exhibition features “As It Is in Heaven: Encaustic Paintings by Marissa Voytenko” from Sept. 3 through Dec. 19.
The museum is open Monday through Friday from 10 a.m.-4 p.m.; and Saturdays from 11 a.m.-5 p.m. It is closed Sundays and college holidays.
